Mamma feels like poo.

Tomorrow is my first OB visit for Baby #2 (who desperately needs a code name). I have many questions already... namely why I seem to have skipped to the third trimester in sleep deprivation, food obsession, bathroom frequency, and jean-size by week 9. I'll let you know.

To keep my mind off the seasickness, I've been planning a trip to Trader Joe's and Ikea on MLK Day. As Laura said, "I can think of no better way to honor Dr. King's memory than by purchasing flat-packed Scandinavian furniture and organic rice pasta." Laura is often quotable. It's easy to like her.

One of my resolutions this year is to get serious about recycling. Initially, we paid the $14 extra a month to our trash company for the blue recycling box... but it filled rarely inconsistently. The walk to the end of the driveway was too long for a peanut butter jar and an empty can of corn. Plus, they only accepted 2 kinds of plastic. Petty, I know... but we rarely do things that are not easy or efficient or decorated well. A quick look at the closest transfer station revealed that trip of larger proportions every other month would allow me to recycle everything. EVERYTHING. If I could make a planned 26-mile trip to Rockford (um, Corner Bar hot dogs anyone?) every once in awhile, I could rid myself of some serious guilt. I'm gaining weight in every area these days. The guilt has got to go.

This means, of course, that I need cute, purposeful containers. Three, I think: a bin for metal, a bin for all plastic, a bin for glass. Paper will continue to go in a paper bag.

I also need/want some air-tight glass jars for simplicity. Brown sugar, rice, multiple pastas, soups, cornmeal, and Bisquick will all find new homes in jars that can live on the counter top or in the freezer or in the cabinets. Their original packaging will be recycled, of course.

It's something most people do already, I know. It's something TexasNorth will do better this year. I'm ready to shift gears. Does your community have a good/easy/friendly recycling system?

I also need these tins.
NEED.

So, happy Monday to you! I hope this week promises you many laughs and much health and an exorbitant amount of *really* good bread.

Oh good for you. That was my respultion for last year but unfortunatly or perhaps fortunatly the preganacy of "wyatt" over came that one.

And yes, I was wearing maternity clothes by 10 weeks.....ugh

I love, love, LOVE those glass jars. *sigh* Ikea, you kill me. I am both thankful and saddened that the nearest one is three hours away.

Last October our garbage service stepped up their recycling in a big way--we went from tiny brown box and 2 kinds of plastics to a giant new container the size of our garbage cans and a program that accepts nearly everything (I'm with you, the curb is much too far to walk for one silly jar, so we kept the small box just off the kitchen for me, and when it's full Matt takes it out to the big can). I love it, and feel so much better about myself and the $10 extra a month. So, perhaps your 26 mile bi-monthly jaunt will be a temporary measure. I'll cross my fingers for improved service soon and in the mean time I'll stand in awe of you anyway, you and your efforts to live the good and simple life, all while growing a new person. I've already warned Matt that if and when I do get pregnant, that will be my official excuse for ANYthing. I CAN'T SWEEP TODAY, I'M GROWING A PERSON.

We recycle everything in Plymouth, in fact our garbage container is usually almost empty as we also compost at the "garden farm". Our bins came from Home Depot but Lowes has them as well, they look like your picture. We went to Bed Bath and Beyond for our containers and have bunches especially for the flour (my bread) and pasta.

Corner bar sounds like really good idea.

Hey there! Second pregnancy, its seems, means that your body knows what to do already, and unfortunately, does it much more quickly than the first time. i felt like a boat by 8 or 9 weeks second time around.
Also, check Gaiam.com for recycling stuff. We got a set of three washable HUGE bags that are labelled for glass, plastic, and paper......they hold a ton, were $15 for a set of three, and wash right out after we transfer to our outdoor "holding" bins. Tommy takes all the organized bins to the station once or twice monthly. Works well for us (and it took a LONG time to get that striaghted out so it wasn't a complete unorganized mess!)
Have a great OB appt!

So whenever you feel discouraged that your pregnancy is confusing you and it's different from last time, just know the fact that it is so different the second time around is sooo encouraging to me! See doesn't that make you feel like dancing around in delight and joy:) But seriously the sick part blows and I am praying for you and if ever you want fighting the barf tips I am here for you sister!

Believe it or not, we do not have recycling here in PA. Some communities do but we do not. Go figure.

Good luck on your appointment tomorrow Kate and feel better!

I have to say, for all the things Scottsdale, AZ, gets wrong (like naming their culinary festival "Eat, Drink and Be Pretty." Please!!!!), they recycle EVERYTHING. Generally, I have more recycling than trash. Yeah!!

Good luck tomorrow.

Best of luck at your appointment tomorrow.
Both of my pregnancies were night and day different and they both 'produced' girls!

Belton does not have curbside recycling GASP!
However we go to Temple every other Saturday to drop ours off. The kids love to yell "Go green!" as we poor our stuff into the huge recycling dumpsters and think of Mr. Jim(the guy in charge)as one of their dearest friends :)
Hope your doctor appt goes well.

That quote makes me sound so culturally indifferent...but really, it's just a healthy dose of irony. It's intentional, I swear.

I don't think I can wait another week for our trip! And I've been eyeing those bins for years, but there's never a good place to put them. No matter where I'm living. And you and I both know that I have lived a lot of places. I just decided to take an unused plastic hamper and toss all the recycling in there. Our apt complex has a huge recycling dumpster. I've got to get an updated list of what all we can take there - if worse comes to worse, the Rockford recycling center's sister complex in Kentwood is only a few miles away. You're rockalicious, girl.

here we have to pay for town garbage bags but recycling is free...to try to encourage people to throw out less and recycle more. they take most things. there is also a transfer station nearby with a swap shop. i got a cool chicken tea kettle there. score! chris is our recycling/composting guru. he is such a devoted composter that we save the compost in a big bin and drive it over to his parent's house 1/2 hour away since we have no yard.
good luck with the doc. it always feels better after asking them a million questions. i used to make lists.

I am catching up on my blog reading tonight, and as I can see, I am a little behind on your fabulous news of baby #2!! YEAH!! Isn't being pregnant a wonderful blessing?

I have a small list for you. :)

Jeff's going to IKEA tomorrow, and he's getting our BIG stuff. So, in order to break up my purchase (and so Jeff doesn't think I'm going crazy or realize that I really am going crazy...), I have a few things for you to get on my behalf.

I'll e-mail it to you...it's a few baskets, a footstool, and some lighting.

Oh my. . .so many things to say. Been reading along since the new year, but pulled in so many directions (and waiting for something brilliant to say in my comment - since babies and new years deserve brilliant observations) that I haven't said a word. Thank you for your voice, which reminds me that Life Is Good. Forget Jake, I want some TexasNorth Life Is Good gear.

By the way, we haul 75% of the Cabin's trash -in the form of recycling - to the transfer station nearest us. I LOVE THIS TRIP. I feel connected to the strangers at the station. My father-in-law says it is a social hour for nuts like me.

Such fabulous information here, peeps! Thank you!

And Zoe: I'm totally teaching Ry to yell GO GREEN when we go to the transfer station. That is so awesome.
